Workshops for staff at the National Museum of Cambodia

Louise Tythacott organised two days of workshops for staff at the National Museum of Cambodia from 26 to 27 January 2023.

The first day was devoted to provenance research and restitution. Here Louise outlined some of the key methods used, as well as relevant archives and libraries in Asia and Europe. Participants were able to work in groups during this session in order to undertake provenance research on specific selected objects. In the afternoon, Louise provided an overview of restitution case studies and legislation, and participants worked in teams to develop arguments for and against restitution. This session also covered strategies for displaying ‘lost’ objects in museums and case studies of exhibitions of returned material. The second day focused on methods of writing interpretative text panels and labels in museums and moved on to outline and discuss some of the key processes and stages involved in organising exhibitions.

On the last day, former Alphawood student, Sanpiseth Kim and his wife, Leakhena, kindly took Louise around the Royal Palace and the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. The director of the Genocide Museum, Hang Nisay, spent the afternoon with Louise and provide a detailed guided tour.

The trip was coordinated by former Alphawood Student, Sopheara Chap, and Louise was warmly welcomed by the Director of the National Museum, Visoth Chhay.
