Biography
Nishmeet Singh is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Economics at SOAS, University of London.
His research examines the links between global corporate concentration of chicken genetics and local lived realities for smallholder farmers in India.
His main interests are in agri-food systems, the food environment, and rural development. He received his PhD in Agriculture and Food Security from the University of Edinburgh, UK, where his doctoral research was a mixed-methods inquiry into the drivers of food choices among farming and pastoralist communities in Tanzania. Through this work, he traced how and why food environments, food safety, and socio-cultural factors shape the acquisition, sale, and consumption of fresh foods. Prior
His research examines the political economies of industrial livestock production, with particular attention to farm- and value-chain-level conditions and impacts of global corporate concentration in India's poultry sector. Using a mixed-methods research design, his work investigates the conditions that distinguish contract and non-contract farming systems and the sustainability of participation for smallholders over time.
