Biography
Paul Steele is a Senior Fellow at the SOAS Centre for Sustainable Finance.
He is also a Senior Associate at the International Institute for Environment and Development where he, until recently, served as Chief Economist leading major projects on innovative finance instruments including nature credits, debt for climate and nature transactions and insurance for human wildlife co-existence.
Paul is a leading expert in nature, climate and environment finance and poverty-environment. He has over 30 years of experience working for governments, international organizations, thinks-tanks and in the private sector in Africa, Asia and Europe. He studied Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Oxford and then Natural Resources Economics at University College London. He started his career as a World Bank secondee into the Ministry of Environment in Sri Lanka.
He then was recruited as the first ever environmental economist into the then Department for International Development (DFID). Later he joined the United Nations in Bangkok to run an Asian regional programme to mainstream climate and nature into public budgets and private investments in South and South East Asia.
