Biography

Professor Sophia Labadi is Professor of Heritage and Academic Lead for the College of Heritage, Riyadh University of the Arts. She holds a PhD and an MA in Heritage studies from UCL and a BA in Political Sciences from Sciences-Po (Grenoble; France).

Professor Labadi has published widely on heritage in the Middle East and North Africa, heritage and sustainable development, museums and social justice, and UNESCO. Funders who have supported her work include UKRI, the European Union, the Korean National Commission for UNESCO, the Heritage Lottery Fund, and English Heritage.

Her work has received several international awards, including the 2023 Reimar Lüst Award for International Scholarship and Cultural Exchange from the Humboldt Foundation and the Thyssen Foundation (Germany); the 2022 Archaeological Heritage Prize from the European Association of Archaeologists; and the 2008 Cultural Policy Research Award. She has held various fellowships included at the University of Bonn and University of Bamberg (Germany) and at Stanford University (USA).

Alongside her academic work, Professor Labadi has acted as consultant for international organisations and governments including UNESCO, the World Bank, ICOMOS; ICCROM, the Arab Regional Centre for World Heritage, BLR World, and the governments of Korea and Saudi Arabia.
