Biography
Valentina is a cultural historian of China, educated in Italy, China, and the UK. On completion of her doctorate at SOAS, Valentina was awarded a British Academy Post-Doctoral Fellowship, which she held at the Department of History, where she is now Research Associate.
Her current research uses leisure, material culture and extra-curricular education to explore the making of child and adult citizens from the 1900s to the 1970s – thus shedding light on the infancy of the generation that currently rules China, and of those who in turn educated them. In particular, Vsalentina investigates the gendering and mobilising of children across regimes; the ludic domestication of science and technology; the politicisation of daily life; and the deployment of child-centred rhetoric to tutor adults and sell products.
