Funder policies

The table below includes the data management and sharing requirements of external funders of SOAS research and links to their official guidance. 

Please contact outputs@soas.ac.uk if your funder isn’t listed and you aren’t sure of their data management and sharing requirements.

AHRC
  • Key data management issues should be covered in the Ethics and Responsible Research and Innovation section of the application. 
  • Research data should be made openly available in a timely and responsible manner, with as few restrictions as possible. 
  • Include a data access statement in published journal articles. 

  • Research data to be stored on SOAS network for 10 years after project ends. 
ESRC
  • Data Management Plan required with application according to set template.
  • Data may be deposited with the UK Data Service (the ESRC data service provider), or another appropriate repository with a metadata record added to the UK Data Service linking to the dataset. 
  • Include a data access statement in published journal articles. 

  • Research data to be stored on SOAS network for 10 years after project ends.
European Commission: Horizon Europe
  • Projects that intend to generate or collect data should provide a brief overview on how the data will be managed in line with the FAIR principles (data should be Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable). 
  • A comprehensive data management plan must then be submitted within six months of the project's start.

  • Researchers should deposit data in a trusted repository which allows it to be as open as possible.  
DFID / Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office 
  • Access and Data Management Plan required in project design.
  • Research data should be deposited in a suitable open data repository within 12 months of final data collection. 
  • All original raw data should be retained for a minimum of five years after project completion and access provided on request. 
  • An alternative option for depositing simple datasets is the FCDO's Research for Development Outputs.
Wellcome
  • If the research generates data, an Outputs Management Plan is required at application.  
  • All research data that underpins publications to be available in a data repository wherever possible by the time of publication. 
  • Research data to be stored on SOAS network for 10 years after close of project. 
Leverhulme Trust
  • No specific data management plan required in application.
  • no specific requirements related to data sharing
British Academy
  • Some funding schemes ask applicants for a statement about how digital data gathered during the project will be stored and made accessible. 
  • Requirements vary between funding schemes, so check what is expected.
