Library membership
Whether you're a SOAS student, alumnus, independent researcher or member of the general public, we offer a range of membership options to help everyone access our collections and study spaces.
Who can join the Library?
SOAS students and staff
You’re already a Library member. Simply use your SOAS ID card to access the Library and borrow books
Membership options for external visitors
We welcome a range of external members, including alumni, independent researchers and members of other universities.
If none of the following categories apply to you – for example, if you are an independent researcher or a member of the public – you can choose from our standard membership options:
- Reference membership – free
- 6-month borrowing membership – £100 (borrow up to five books at a time)
- 12-month borrowing membership – £200 (borrow up to five books at a time)
All visitors must have confirmed Library membership or have a pre-arranged appointment before arriving. Unfortunately, we cannot admit guests accompanying students, staff or other visitors.
Apply for Library membership
To apply for Library membership, complete the online Library Membership Form.
Please allow up to 5 working days for your application to be processed. We’ll email you when your card is ready to collect.
Before you visit
Before you visit, please:
- complete the online form
- wait for your confirmation email
- bring your photo ID + proof of address listed in the confirmation email
What your membership includes
Depending on your membership type, you may be able to:
- study in the Library
- borrow books
- access printed journals and Special Collections
- use e-journals, e-books and databases while you're in the Library

Renew your membership
If your card number starts with LW you can renew your membership online.
Lost or stolen card?
If your card is lost or stolen, please tell us as soon as possible. If you are:
- SOAS staff or student: contact campussecurity@soas.ac.uk to request a replacement card.
- Any other type of Library member: contact library@soas.ac.uk. A replacement card will cost £5 for external members.
