SOAS ranked in top 50 universities in the world for internationalism

10 June 2020

SOAS University of London has been ranked in the World’s Top 50 universities for internationalism, after the QS World University Rankings 2021 were published today.

The specific rankings look at two measures, the International Faculty Ratio , which measures the proportion of non-domestic faculty at an institution; and the International Student Ratio , which measures the proportion of non-domestic students at an institution. This provides an indication of a university’s ability to attract talent from across the world.

The positioning of SOAS in the top 50 indicates “a university putting effort into being global, as well as whether it is taken seriously enough by students and academics around the world for them to want to be there.”

Valerie Amos, Director of SOAS University of London, said:

“Being recognised for our internationalism is essential in 2020. We are based in London, but our outlook is truly global; with our vast repository of knowledge and expertise on our specialist regions of Africa, Asia and the Middle East, we are uniquely placed to inform and shape current thinking about the economic, political, cultural, security and religious challenges of our world.

“SOAS has a proud history of welcoming students from around the world, and these rankings continue our tradition as one of the most international universities in the world, with the proportion of international students around five times the global average.

“SOAS is an exceptionally cosmopolitan and diverse environment with 56% of students from outside the UK, and we also international students on Study Abroad and Exchange programmes and the Summer School.

“In these uncertain times, we want to reassure you that SOAS is looking forward to welcoming new and continuing students in September 2020 and building on our reputation of internationalism highlighted in today’s QS Rankings announcement.”

The QS World University Rankings , produced by global higher education consultancy QS Quacquarelli Symonds, rank the world’s top 1000 universities. Overall SOAS is ranked within the top 30% of universities in the world.
