20 June 2022

SOAS University of London climbs the league tables once more and proves performance in teaching and research is driving impressive results.

This time SOAS's Humanities output has been recognised as the Complete University Guide 2023 report that Anthropology at the University now ranks in 5th place across the UK.

Philosophy and History have also made incredible jumps and climbed 20 and 21 places respectively, and rank 11th and 12th place in the UK. The study of Politics is now 12th in the UK, moving an impressive 10 places.

The Complete University Guide 2022 provides independent rankings and publishes their report annually and is the 'go to' respected source of advice for students and academics embarking on their university journey: Complete University Guide - University Rankings, Guides and Courses.

Ed Simpson, Head of Anthropology said:

"We are delighted to be climbing these league tables at such a crucial point for SOAS. Our recent growth is down to the hard work of our students and the quality of teaching and the incredible research our academics are undertaking. We are proud that our Anthropology department has reached 5th place in the UK, which means it is leading the way with the latest thinking around how our societies and cultures develop over time."

Adam Habib, SOAS Director, added:

“This is fantastic news for our humanities subjects. I am thrilled that the Complete University Guide has recognised the value of SOAS humanities subjects. The Arts & Humanities programmes we offer have never been more relevant for students wanting to understand and address the global challenges of our time. SOAS is a university that explores and seeks to find the solutions to the big issues of our time; it stands bravely and questions the social order of life itself and how we can create a better planet for everyone. We are a university with the future firmly in mind and for this we are clearly being recognised."

Anthropology is also in the global top 10 in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2022 and Politics is in the top 20.

SOAS also ranks 46th in the UK overall in this year’s Complete University Guide 2023.
