Gender Studies

Welcome to the department

We focus on the study of gender that attends to the complex specificities of Asia, Africa, the Middle East and their diasporas.

Our focus on Asia, Africa and the Middle East productively disrupts the teleologies of 'Western' feminism. Students here grapple with the limits of ‘Western’ and elite feminisms and tackle the problems of class violence, racism, transmisogyny, Islamophobia, ableism and queerphobia in contemporary feminist political projects. We offer an interdisciplinary space to foster new strategies to decolonise feminist scholarship and praxis.
