Preliminary Law, Legal Reasoning and Legal Methods

SOAS Law School offers an intensive one-week preliminary module in Law and Legal Method which is taught in September in the week before Welcome Week.

The preliminary module is designed primarily for those students who have not previously studied law. Its purpose is to provide students wishing to study law at postgraduate level with an introduction to law, legal method and legal skills.

The module is strongly recommended for those students entering the LLM who do not have the LLB or an equivalent degree. It may also be of interest to those who are new to studying law in the UK.

Module

The preliminary module runs on campus over a one-week period immediately preceding Welcome Week. The module is designed to provide an introduction to:

  • law, legal method, and legal reasoning
  • critical approaches to law
  • the core areas of the LLM specialist pathways taught at SOAS
  • legal research and writing skills

Payment

For SOAS LLM students there is no fee for the preliminary module.

For students on other Masters programmes (in or outside SOAS): the preliminary module fee is £350. You can pay via the SOAS online store. Please make your payment

Those who are not studying a postgraduate degree with SOAS School of Law will need to bring the receipt on the first day so that your library cards may be provided.
