Biography
Helen Blatherwick is a Teaching Fellow for the Arabic to English strand of MA Translation, and a Research Associate working in premodern Arabic literature. She received her PhD from SOAS, University of London, with a thesis on intertextuality in an Egyptian popular epic.
Her current research focuses on the history of emotions in Arabic popular and adab texts, and explores the ways authors speak directly about emotions in their writings, as well as the indirect ways they represent emotional behaviour and social mores.
Her work examines what these representations can reveal about how different emotional communities think and feel about emotions, and how these attitudes are reflected in, for example, ideas surrounding gender roles and power dynamics at both a personal and societal level.
