Course overview

As capital of the Mamluk Sultanate, which ruled over Egypt, Syria and the Holy Cities of Mecca and Medina, Cairo in the fifteenth century was one of the largest and most cosmopolitan cities of the Islamic world. Its markets drew merchants, scholars and pilgrims from Africa, Asia and Europe.

This online specialist art short course will explore the urban fabric of the Mamluk capital and how it was shaped by the ambitious building projects of its sultans and amirs, culminating in the patronage of Sultan Qaytbay. The lectures offer a broad view of the artistic output of the period, looking at metalwork, manuscripts and woodwork, as well as glass, textiles and architecture.

The course is offered by the SOAS-Alphawood Asian Art Programme and convened by Chiara De Nicolais (co-convenor of the Arts of the Islamic World module). Each lecture will be followed by a Q&A session, offering a unique opportunity to engage with leading scholars and curators in the field.

Structure

The course consists of eight, weekly lectures, hosted via Zoom on Friday afternoons (UK time). Each lecture is followed by an extended Q&A opportunity.

All lectures will also be recorded and made available for registrants to view in their own time for three months after the course ends, so if you can’t join a session live you can catch up at your leisure.

The full schedule will be confirmed in the near future.
