Course overview

This course provides a thorough introduction to Central Kurdish (Sorani). 

It covers typical themes of grammar vocabulary and cultural contexts of Central Kurdish (Sorani). You will develop an understanding of the Kurdish (Sorani) alphabet and main standard features of pronunciation, how to read and write Kurdish (Sorani) and to build up basic knowledge about the Kurdish language as well as basic awareness of Kurdish culture, and society. This course is delivered by the Language Centre.

Method

The course is delivered through 20 hours of on campus structured lessons with the teacher. Students are expected to undertake about 1-2 hours of self-study on top of the class contact hours. The course is designed so that, over the 10‑week period, you should have the opportunity to achieve the stated objectives, depending on your engagement and progress.

Materials

The course materials will be provided by the tutor.

Entry requirements and progression route

For the first stage of Central Kurdish (Sorani) Beginners, no previous knowledge is required. To be able to join Beginners 2 or 3 you should have completed Beginners 1 and 2 respectively at SOAS Language Centre or have an equivalent knowledge of guided learning hours (20 hours per each sub-level). The progression route from Central Kurdish (Sorani) Beginners 1 is to Kurdish Beginners 2; from Beginners 2 to Beginners 3. Upon successful completion of Central Kurdish (Sorani) Beginners 3 you will able to progress to the next course level; Elementary. Students may request a Certificate of Attendance upon completion of a course, provided they have at least 70% attendance.

Structure

Central Kurdish (Sorani) Beginners 1

By the end of the course you should be able to:

  • Identity and use the Kurdish (Sorani) script
  • Greet and introduce yourself and others using polite expressions
  • Identify and use vocabulary related to food
  • Use vocabulary for household objects
  • Describe people and things
  • Use numbers for shopping (e.g. asking for price)
  • Talk about times and days of the week
  • Talking about past events
  • Express likes and dislikes
  • Describe your family
