Assessment procedures for Korean

First of all, please join Beginners 1 course:

1. If you can not read and write Hangeul confidently
2. If you are not familiar with numbers, such as counting with pure Korean numbers and reading large numbers like a price tag with Sino-Korean numbers.
3. If you can not describe your daily routines like ‘I’m going to the office’ or ‘I’m drinking tea’.

If you would like to join a Korean course at any level above Beginners 1 and if you have not done a Korean course at the SOAS Language Centre before, please follow the steps below.

Please select the assessment based on your study hours or the TOPIK (Test of Proficiency In Korean) Grades as outlined below.

Please do not use any dictionary or textbooks when taking the assessment paper. It should not take more than 30 minutes to complete each assessment. If it is taking much longer, please consider taking a lower level test.

Once completed, please email the test to korean@soas.ac.uk so we can arrange a meeting with our tutor to discuss which level is suitable for you.

1. Please take the Placement Test 1 if you have studied Korean for 60 hours or less and are not sure which level course you should join. If you find the test very easy, you might also want to take the Placement Test 2, too. 
2. Please take the Placement Test 2 if you have studied Korean for 120 hours or less and are not sure about your level. If you find the test very easy, you might also want to take the Placement Test 3, too.
3. Please take the Placement Test 3 if you have studied Korean for 180 hours or less and are not sure about your level. If you find the test very easy, you might also want to take the Placement Test 4, too.
4. Please take the Placement Test 4 if you have studied Korean for 240 hours or less and are not sure about your level. If you find the test very easy, you might want to talk to one of our tutors about a suitable course for you. 
5. If you have passed the Test of Proficiency in Korean with Grade 1 within the past 2 years, please take the Placement Test 3. If you find this test too easy or too hard, you may want to take either the Placement Test 4 or 2 instead or alongside. 
6. If you have passed  the Test of Proficiency in Korean with Grade 2 within the past 2 years, please take the Placement Test 4. If you find this test too hard, you may want to take either the Placement Test 3 instead or alongside. If you find this test too easy, please speak to our administrator for  a suitable Upper Intermediate or Advanced level course for you. 
7. 7. If you have passed the Test of Proficiency in Korean with Grade 3, 4, 5 or 6 within the past 2 years, please speak to our administrator for a suitable Upper Intermediate or Advanced level course for you.
