Scholarship overview

SOAS is pleased to offer three 3-year PhD scholarships for entry in September 2026 in the form of the AHRC Landscape Awards scheme, part of the London and the Southeast Regional Hub (Hub G) Partnership.

We encourage applicants from a broad range of disciplines and approaches to the humanities to apply. The award will cover tuition fees and a stipend over a three-year period (or part time equivalent).

Eligible programmes

Any full-time or part-time research degree programme beginning in the 2026/27 academic year

Candidate criteria

The scholarship is open to UK/EU and overseas applicants. Candidates must

  • Possess or expect to be awarded before the 2026/27 academic year a masters degree with a distinction mark or equivalent. Applicants with a non-UK masters degree must be among the top rank of their cohort as evidenced by references and transcripts.
  • Have demonstrated in the research proposal of their application for admission that their research is focused on the humanities.
  • Have submitted a complete application for admission by the scholarship application deadline.
  • Have an offer of admission by the time the SOAS Scholarship Panel meets.

If your offer is conditional on English, please arrange your English test and ensure you meet the English requirements as soon as possible. Information on English test systems that SOAS accepts can be found on the English language requirements webpage.

Candidate assessment

Candidates will be assessed on academic merit and their PhD proposal by a selection panel in the relevant department of application. A school-wide SOAS Selection Panel will then convene to select the three top applicants for the award.

The assessment will be based on the information in your application. Selectors will be looking at degree results, academic references, statement of intent and full research proposal, and other relevant information.

Only those who have been accepted for admission will be considered for shortlisting by the SOAS Selection Panel.

Application procedure

Step one: apply for your programme

Applicants must have submitted a complete admission application by the scholarship application deadline. The panel will be considering your scholarship application together with your online application for admission.

The complete application for admission can take up to 4 weeks to be considered by the department, although this duration may vary depending on the time of year. You should be prepared to wait up to 6 weeks in busy periods.

For guidance on applying to a research programme and information regarding applications, please visit our How to apply to research programmes page. Further information about PhDs at SOAS University of London is available on the Postgraduate research degrees page.

Step two: apply for the scholarship

Please complete the Expression of Interest form by 12 noon (UK local time) on 30 January 2026. We will not consider late or incomplete applications.

Notification of results

The scholarship shortlisting and awarding period is expected to finish by the end of May 2026. Successful candidates will be contacted first and once all awards have been allocated, unsuccessful candidates will be notified.
