Scholarship overview
SOAS is delighted to announce that the SOAS-Alphawood MA in Asian Art (online) will be supported by a number of Alphawood scholarships in the 2026/27 academic year.
These scholarships are designed to increase access to the online programme by helping scholars to stay in their home country and achieve a SOAS-Alphawood Postgraduate Diploma in Asian Art remotely. They will cover the cost of all tuition fees and provide a stipend to help with living costs while studying.
About the Alphawood scholarships
This scholarship is offered by the SOAS-Alphawood Programme, which is generously supported by the Alphawood Foundation (Chicago). The remit of the programme is to:
'support and advance, through study and research, the understanding and preservation of Southeast Asian Buddhist and Hindu art and architecture from ancient to pre-modern times. The remit includes study of the built environment, sculpture, painting, illustrated texts, textiles and other tangible or visual representations, along with the written word related to these, and archaeological, museum and cultural heritage studies.'
Since 2014, the Alphawood Foundation has provided for over 100 scholarships which supported Southeast Asian scholars' postgraduate study at PGDip, MA and MPhil/PhD levels at SOAS. The Alphawood Foundation also provides support for our students to advance their English-language proficiency.
About the programme of study
The SOAS-Alphawood MA in Asian Art (online) brings our esteemed programme to you, wherever you are in the world, for flexible study via an entirely online learning programme.
Students are able to select from a number of modules to create their preferred pathway of study. Those supported by an Alphawood scholarship will be required to take the Arts of Southeast Asia (online) as part of their programme, and are strongly encouraged to join – where possible – Asian Art in the Museum, our 15-credit module taking place in London over two weeks in July 2027.
Pease note that Alphawood Scholars must ensure that their chosen topic for their Dissertation in Asian Art module (and the Independent Study Project in Asian Art History, if that module is selected) engages with the Alphawood remit: ‘to further the understanding and preservation of ancient to pre-modern Buddhist and Hindu art and architecture in Southeast Asia’.
Provisions
The scholarship will provide:
- Tuition fees: scholars’ SOAS tuition fees will be paid in full for the SOAS-Alphawood Postgraduate Diploma (online) programme and the cost of any English Language support.
- Maintenance: an allowance will be paid to the scholar to help contribute to the costs of living and studying in their home country (allowance will reflect local living costs).
Asian Art in the Museum
Additional funding is available to Alphawood scholarship recipients to cover the cost of studying the ‘Asian Art in the Museum’ module in London in July 2027.
This funding will cover all the costs associated with this course, including: tuition fees; travel costs; visa fees; accommodation; and maintenance (daily allowance for living costs).

Use of AI and LLMs
Applicants for both the programme and the scholarship should produce an original text of which they are the sole author. Use of AI or Large Language Models (such as ChatGPT) in preparing your application will be detrimental to your application. Please be aware that all applications will be run through an AI detection tool.
In the past, we have received several applications that used AI that were generic and uninspiring, and told us little if anything about the individual applicants. If you make obvious use of AI and LLMs to write your scholarship application we will reject your applications and ask you to reapply in a future year. We want to hear your voice and engage with your ideas, reflections and proposals.
