Scholarship overview

The School of Arts at SOAS University of London is pleased to offer one PhD Scholarships in Chinese Art History covering tuition fee for a full-time UK/Home student doctoral project beginning in 24/25 on behalf of Tim Liang.

This will cover Home/UK fees for the 3-years of active research.

Project details 

Preference will be given to research on the arts and material culture of dynastic or pre-dynastic China conducted primarily through art historical methodologies. Applicants are encouraged to reach out to potential supervisors in the School of Arts to discuss their proposals. 

New applicants only (new admissions, starting in September 2024).

Candidate criteria 

  • Open to Home/UK Students.
  • Any incoming full-time student with a project proposal in Chinese Art History.
  • A distinction at MA Level in Art History or equivalent.
  • Applicants must have applied to the postgraduate research degree (MPhil/PhD) at SOAS by the time of the application to the scholarship.

Candidate assessment 

Candidates will be assessed based on their application to the scholarship and academic merit based on the information provided in their application to study (Research Proposal and Personal Statement)

Scholarship application deadline 

  • Scholarship applications must be received no later than 12:00 PM (UK local time) on 14 June 2024.
  • In order to be considered for the scholarship, you must have submitted:
        o a complete scholarship application 
        o a complete online application to a MPhil/PhD programme 
  • Please note that complete applications for admission can take up to 4 weeks to be considered by the Department, although this duration can vary depending on the time of year. You should be prepared to wait up to 6 weeks in busy periods.
  • Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

Scholarship application procedures

There is a two-step procedure:

Step 1: Apply for your programme

Guidance for applying for Research Admission and information on what makes a complete application can be found on how to apply (research).

Your research proposal should take account of the project title and outline above, and indicate how you would aim to carry out the research. In your personal statement, please indicate why this project interests you and in what ways you are qualified to undertake it.

Step 2: Apply for the scholarship

You must apply for this scholarship by 12:00 PM (UK local time) on 14 June 2024 via the online application form.

Notification of results

The scholarship shortlisting and awarding period is expected to be completed by the end of July 2024, at the earliest. Successful candidates will be contacted first and once all awards have been allocated, the unsuccessful candidates will be notified.
