Sustainability in education

Our vision is to equip students with the knowledge, skills and values required to contribute to a more sustainable, equitable and just future.

Drawing on SOAS’s distinctive expertise in Africa, Asia and the Middle East, students are encouraged to engage with diverse perspectives on sustainability, climate justice, social justice and development. 

We support learners to become thoughtful global citizens capable of addressing interconnected environmental, social, cultural and economic challenges in their future careers and communities.

Through accessible and empowering education, we support students to contribute actively to a fair and just planetary community. We are doing this by:

• Embedding Education for Sustainable Development across the curriculum through the application of the Education for Sustainability toolkit.
   
• Ensuring all teaching staff have access to training and professional development in Education for Sustainable Development.
   
• Supporting teaching through the Education for Sustainability Appraisal Toolkit designed help academic staff incorporate critical thought about sustainability and climate change into their approach to teaching and to support innovative learning and assessment design which develop SDG competencies.
   
• Mapping, reviewing and tracking Education for Sustainable Development across all modules and programmes ensuing that students engage with their subjects though the lens of sustainability.
   
• Mapping SOAS Graduate Attributes against UNESCO Sustainability Competencies to ensure students develop future-facing skills including systems thinking, critical reflection, collaboration and responsible action.
   
• Developing new programmes and modules that address a changing ecological, social, political, economic and cultural world.
   
• Expanding access to higher education through flexible learning opportunities, including online programmes and short courses.
   
• Developing opportunities for experiential and place-based learning through initiatives such as the SOAS Living Lab.
   
• Sustainability scholarships - supporting access and leadership through four fully funded SOAS Sustainable Development Goal Scholarships designed to support future leaders committed to sustainability, social justice, and regenerative development through postgraduate education and research.
