Biography
Alice Emmanuelle Lyzcia is an interdisciplinary doctoral researcher in the Department of History at SOAS.
Her historical research explores women’s Urdu epistolary and literary production in twentieth-century Pakistan. In particular, she focuses on women writing from psychiatric wards and during periods of psychiatric treatment. Her thesis examines the sociological dimensions of psychiatry, as well as the subjective experience of “losing one’s mental balance” (ẕěhnī tavāzun khonā). Her work is informed in orientation by years of professional experience in acute psychiatric wards and a deep commitment to the destigmatisation of severe mental illness.
Alice is on the board of directors as Student Representative for the Association for the Study of Persianate Studies (ASPS), and Representative for the Promotion of Urdu in the United Kingdom for the National Language Promotion Department (NLPD) of the Government of Pakistan. She teaches modules on political theory and global history in the Department of Politics and International Studies at SOAS.
