Biography
Cesilia is a Doctoral Researcher, communications specialist, and creative, with over 8 years of experience in communications and marketing across the corporate and charitable sectors. She has a double bachelor's degree from Universitas Indonesia, Depok, Indonesia and Curtin University, Perth, Australia, majoring in communications.
At Universitas Indonesia, she received a B.SOC. Sc. in Communication Science (Advertising) with a dissertation on "The Negative and Bias Interpretations of Mainstream Topics in News Media Within a Global Scale", which was awarded a distinction, and she received a BA in Mass Communication from Curtin University, in journalism and graphic design. She then did her master's at the London School of Economics (LSE), receiving an MSc in Media, Communication, and Development. Her master's thesis was titled "Creating Awareness with Twitter Narratives: How personal storytelling through Twitter could function as alternative news in Indonesia's activism scene."
She has primarily worked in communications, starting her career as a journalist in Australia. She eventually fell into marketing, working as a copywriter and marketing officer within the corporate sector. She also established her own media platform, Hybris Media, that aims to produce alternative news in the form of human-interest pieces and to bring vital subjects and discussions to light. Recently, she worked at the Royal Economic Society as a Digital Communications Officer before leaving to pursue her PhD.
Through her research, she aims to contribute to the implementation of AI policy in Indonesia and the Global South. Her passion for postcolonial studies, the topical nature of AI, and her involvement with AI through work have led her to want to understand how colonial residues may impact how AI is used, particularly in journalism. With a background in media, Cesilia has also presented at the ASEAN Youth Forum 2020 on "Freedom of the Press" and at the Elevate the Future Webinar 2020 on "The Importance of Freedom of Expression". In addition, she has also organised multiple discussion and events on various topics such as on "How to Deal with Gender-Based Discrimination", "How to Navigate Labels and Questioning Self-Identity in a Globalised and Migratory World", "How to Eliminate the Stigma Around Mental Health and Mental Illness", "Caring for the Environment: Addressing Apathy and Inaction"
