About this event

The field of Global China Studies has become a growth industry in scholarship and journalism, in tandem with China’s outward expansion and engagement in all forms of power and influence.

This event consists of two presentations. Ching Kwan Lee will delineate two broad approaches to global China — the grand and the granular — and discuss lessons and agendas of the global China literature. As an example on how to do global China studies,

Carlos Oya will introduce his new book on China’s impact on African industrialization , where he explores the potential and real consequences of China's growing engagements in Africa for their industrialization aspirations, through a labour lens, and with a special emphasis on policy agency and variation across African contexts.

Agenda

  • “Beyond the Grand and the Granular of Global China Studies” by Ching Kwan Lee
  • "China for Africa's Industrialization? Book Launch" by Carlos Oya
