About this event
Join us for a short film screening, curatorial presentation and a post-screening discussion of HER Voice, Her LENS: Women, Visibility and the Moving Image.
Who has the right to tell women’s stories? Who controls the gaze, and whose experiences are truly made visible?
HER Voice, Her LENS is a curated film screening event focusing on women filmmakers and their visual expression. Bringing together moving-image works by women from diverse cultural and geographical backgrounds, the programme invites audiences to engage with a range of female experiences through short films, documentaries and experimental moving-image works. It explores how women tell their own stories, express their bodies and identities, and use cinema to examine the relationship between personal experience and wider social structures.
Guided by three interconnected themes – Becoming Visible, The Body Speaks, and Rewriting Structures – the programme presents diverse narrative perspectives and creative approaches, exploring women’s self-expression, visibility and cinematic authorship. Following the screening, Dr Xiaoning Lu of SOAS University of London will chair a post-screening discussion with the curator and invited filmmakers, exploring the creative approaches behind the works, the representation of women’s experiences on screen and related questions. Audience members will also have the opportunity to ask questions and share their perspectives.
