About this event

Showcasing five pieces by Sam Ntiro (academic, artist and diplomat), the art of Natasha Sweeting (contemporary diasporic artist) and perspectives from Lorna Mashiba (Rangi Gallery founder), Kate Cowcher (Historian of art from Africa) and Hannah O'Leary (Senior Advisor, modern African art at Sotheby's).

We are pleased to bring together some of the most exciting voices shaping the visual arts across Tanzania, East Africa and the diaspora for a conversation that explores the evolving landscape of art in the region. In conversation will be:

  • Dr Kate Cowcher from St Andrews, expert on the art of the renowned Tanzanian artist, Sam Ntiro, celebrated painter known for his evocative depictions of East African life and culture. Dr Kate will also speak to five paintings of Sam Ntiro that were recently discovered in the Tanzania High Commission in London.
  • Natasha Sweeting Contemporary artist whose work explores identity, memory, and the Caribbean–African visual dialogue. Natasha's expressive dot painting inspired by Tanzanian indigenous art and her bold paintings will be on display and available for purchase.
  • Lorna Mashiba, Founder of Rangi Gallery, championing emerging African artists and bold new voices.
  • Hannah O'Leary is advisor Hannah O’Leary first joined Sotheby’s in 2005, initially working in the Dublin and Melbourne offices. In 2006 she joined Bonhams in London, where she helped pioneer the first international auctions of South African Art and Modern & Contemporary African Art, becoming Head of Department in 2010. With 10 years’ experience in this field, and having overseen record-breaking sales in both categories, she returned to Sotheby’s in 2016 to lead the growth of this rapidly expanding market.
