Biography

Marcos Ortiz Finch is a London-based academic, journalist, consultant, and media analyst. He holds a PhD in Media and Communications at Goldsmiths University of London, a BA in Social Information from Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, a Masters 2 degree in International Digital Journalism at Lumière Lyon 2 University in France, an MA in Global Digital Cultures at SOAS, and two diplomas in French Studies.

At SOAS, together with coordinating the MA Global Journalism, Marcos supervises MA dissertations and has worked as Assistant Tutor. His PhD thesis, titled 'The Weaving Power of the Media: Ideological Cartographies in Post-uprising Chile', explored the underlying reasons why the Chilean traditional print media, entangled with other hegemonic actors – political parties, corporations, universities, and think tanks – aimed to secure the political economic status quo even after it was put into question during the social uprising of 2019.

Marcos has over 20 years of experience as documentary film director, editor, scriptwriter and columnist for written, radio, television and digital media, as well as having worked as communications officer for presidential campaigns and political parties. He is also founder of Ojo del Medio and Mirador de Medios, online platforms which analyse Chilean media.

Research interests

Marcos’ research interests lie at the intersection of media power, the political economy of the media, sociology of news, and elite theory. Geographically, his focus is on Latin America, and Chile in particular.
