Biography
Ms. Ming Yang has a BA in Interpreting and Translation from Beijing International Studies University and an MSc in Translation Studies from the University of Edinburgh, where she received professional training in computer-aided translation, liaison interpreting, consecutive interpreting and simultaneous interpreting.
Her BA and MSc dissertations are focused on humor translation on screen and cultural taboos in literary translation, supervised by Dr. Zhiyyao Zhang and Dr. Sui He respectively. She is currently conducting her doctoral research in the Department of Linguistics at SOAS, supervised by Prof. Lutz Marten and Prof. Nana Sato-Rossberg. Her PhD research project investigates the following questions. (1) What is meaning? (2) What can be identified as features that determine the meaning of a social practice? (3) How to visualize and quantify the relation between features and meaning? (4) How did people from various ethnic and cultural communities interpret the meaning of luxury brands’ controversial marketing campaigns? (5) How did luxury brands use languages to disseminate ideologies? (6) What is the politics of language?
Her research adopts a variety of research methods including online surveys, fieldwork, and discourse analysis to provide empirical evidence for newly released linguistic theories, help people from marginalized communities justify their concerns over allegedly implicit gender and racial discrimination embedded in controversial advertisements and reveal the undercover fight over the dominance of power in ideology dissemination.
Ms. Ming Yang audited translation and linguistics modules at UCL and SOAS, which cover semantics, pragmatics, psycholinguistics, syntax, audiovisual translation and cultural translation. Ms. Ming Yang completed the Preparing to Teach training session at SOAS. She has been invited to present her research at SOAS’s guest lectures and external conferences. Before coming to SOAS, Ms. Ming Yang worked in the media and translation industry in China. She has provided screenwriting, video-editing, translation and interpreting services for various organizations.
