International Day for the Abolition of Slavery: Slavery in Africa today - an unfinished business

Join us on the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery on 2 December 2022 for the event, Slavery in Africa today: an unfinished business, which will take place on Friday 2 December, 6-8pm, Khalili Lecture Theatre (KLT), SOAS, and Online via Zoom.

Dr Marie Rodet, Reader in the history of Africa and PI of the research-action project “Slavery and Forced Migration in Mali”, and her team will present the outcomes of their research on descent-based slavery in Mali.

Slavery still prevails in the West African Sahel today, in the form of descent-based slavery, a modern system of hereditary slavery leading to systematic discrimination, marginalization, violence, and forced migration.

Malian activists will also testify to the violence of descent-based slavery in West Africa and present the work they have conducted so far to fight against this practice.

The event will be introduced by Dr Wayne Dooling, Chair of the Centre of African Studies, followed by a presentation by Dr Marie Rodet on Escaping slavery in Mali today.

Malian anti-slavery activist Salufu Kamara (Gambana RMFP) will discuss, activism against descent-based slavery in West Africa, whilst Hassa Konaté Camara (Gambana RMFP) will discuss women against slavery in Mali. Finally, the event will close with a presentation from Dr Lotte Pelckmans (University of Copenhagen) on Social media, the African diaspora and anti-slavery activism.
