Japanese history expert features in new BBC documentary on civilisations
Dr Satona Suzuki, Senior Lecturer in Japanese and Modern Japanese History, featured and provided expertise to the new BBC Two Documentary, 'Civilisations: Rise and Fall'.
In the series, Dr Suzuki shared insight on the history of Japan’s Tokugawa shogunate regime, a prominent military government that ruled in the Edo period of Japan between 1603 to 1867. The episode also explores the meaning of the samurai, and Japan’s own battle in preserve its own traditions, while also being exposed to the influence of the Western world in the 19th century.
Being part of such a major project is always an honour. It was also a great opportunity to contribute to a representation of Japan that is historically grounded and culturally informed.
Dr Suzuki and her family also received a special invitation to attend a special screening of the Documentary at the British Museum, which airs this month. Speaking on her involvement in the series, Dr Suzuki said:
“Being part of such a major project is always an honour. It was also a great opportunity to contribute to a representation of Japan that is historically grounded and culturally informed. Attending the sneak preview of the series at the British Museum was fantastic – a real Night at the Museum moment! My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed the evening.”
