Meera Syal and Robert Deeks awarded in King’s New Year Honours
SOAS Honorary Meera Syal, alongside alumnus, the charity CEO Robert Deeks, have been recognised in the New Year Honours List 2026.
The critically acclaimed actress, comedian, and writer Dame Meera was recognised for her illustrious contributions to both acting and theatre – having creative roles across both Channel 4 and the BBC through the late 90s, including shows and films such as the sketch comedy ‘Goodness Gracious Me!’, Bhaji on The Beach and The Kumars at No 42.
In 2013, SOAS presented Dame Meera with an Honorary Doctorate for her inspirational work in the world of arts, and creating a unique voice for British Asians for where there have not been heard before.
SOAS alum Robert Deeks was honoured for his outstanding services to young people and to the community in Slough. His wider work as the CEO of Together as One a charity that empowers the next generation through a variety of group based initiatives – from young carers, to arts and heritage projects, designed to strengthen understanding between communities – was recognised in the award.
