Biography
Siviwe Mhlana is a labour market and development economist. Her doctoral research explores the link between activities in the informal economy and social and ecological reproduction.
Her research employs mixed methods and epistemic diversity to develop an economic argument for policies that support work in the informal economy as integral for achieving inclusive and sustainable development.
Siviwe has led and collaborated in the implementation of several global research projects. Her recent projects include an assessment of gender in the South African just energy transition, an examination of intersectionality in development research, and an investigation of tax justice in the informal economy.
Siviwe is engaged in policy-relevant debates and research at the local and international levels. She is a researcher at the Southern Centre for Inequality Studies at the University of the Witwatersrand. She also currently serves on the board of the Institute for Economic Justice and has worked as a consultant for organisations such as Women in Informal Employment: Globalizing and Organizing, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ), and the International Women's Health Coalition. Siviwe has authored and co-authored several studies on the implications of economic policies on the lives and livelihoods of communities and economies in the global South.
