The Faking Game: Understanding Notions of Authenticity of Chinese Painting through Early Chinese Collections at the British Museum Acquired between 1881 and 1910

Biography

Yitao Qian is a Ph.D. student at the Department of History of Art and Archaeology, SOAS. 

He received his MA in art history and cultural policy at UCD in 2020 and studied archaeology at UCL in 2010. From 2016 to 2019, he worked as a senior curator at Duoyunxuan Art Centre in Shanghai, which specialises in one of China’s National Intangible Cultural Heritage, mubanshuiyin (water-soluble woodblock prints). 

In 2018, he curated the ‘Master Engravers’ exhibition in Paris in collaboration with L’atelier du Louvre, which explored the cultural and political functions of this continuingly evolving craft and its value today. In 2020, he co-curated the ‘Fragrance of Books’ exhibition in Dublin for the Marsh’s Library, which examined the study of medieval China through the lens of Jesuits and European travellers.

Mr Qian is currently a teaching assistant of Curating Cultures and Curating Global Arts modules at SOAS.

Collecting history of early Chinese painting collections in the West; understanding issues of authenticity of Chinese art
