SOAS students intern for organisations in Ho Chi Minh City and Seoul

10 August 2022

This summer, seven SOAS undergraduate students from backgrounds underrepresented in higher education were selected for internships in Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam) and Seoul (South Korea).

This initiative is part of the Access and Participation team's efforts to address inequality in participation in international mobility. Funded by the Access and Participation Plan, the internships last 8 weeks.

This year's bumper number is the result of the 2020 border closing due to the pandemic. The first ever cohort of SOAS student-interns went to Ho Chi Minh City in 2019. They worked for a law firm, the not-for-profit sector and in logistics. This year's students are interning as business analysts, marketing researchers in a start-up company, project associates in a NGO, fundraisers also in the not-for-profit sector, and in HR and Law.

The internships are delivered in partnership with CRCC Asia , who also offers in-country basic language tuition, business networking opportunities and social events for interns from all partner universities.

The 2019 student-interns reported a positive working experience and exciting opportunities to get to know Vietnam's beautiful cities and countryside. Renata Albuquerque, Access, Participation and Student Success Manager said:

"We have been receiving regular correspondence from our student-interns, who have told us that they are settling in well in their role and accommodation. Research conducted by UUK found that international student mobility is associated with better grades, and increased employability and future earnings. The benefits for learners derived from international mobility are well documented but so are the barriers. We are really pleased to be able to provide this opportunity to our students"
