Course overview
This online course will explore the art, archaeology, and heritage of the diverse cultures of the Indian Ocean World.
You will focus on coastal interactions, maritime routes, and the movement of goods, people and ideas. Lectures will look at discreet case studies ranging from handweaving from Madagascar, archaeological excavations in Oman, Tamil traders and their presence at key ports, coastal Hindu and Buddhist shrines, the arrival of Islam in Southeast Asia, and the role shipwrecks play in understanding Chinese interactions with the wider Indian Ocean World.
Weekly Q&A sessions will provide a unique opportunity to discuss the art and archaeology of the Indian Ocean World with leading scholars, archaeologists and curators in the field.
The course is offered by the SOAS-Alphawood Asian Art Programme and convened by Dr Mizuho Ikeda (Research Fellow, The Louvre Abu Dhabi) and Dr Stephen Murphy (Pratapaditya Pal Senior Lecturer in Curating and Museology of Asian Art, SOAS).
Structure
The course consists of eight, weekly lectures, hosted via Zoom on Friday afternoons (UK time). Each lecture is followed by an extended Q&A opportunity.
All lectures will also be recorded and made available for registrants to view in their own time for three months after the course ends, so if you can’t join a session live you can catch up at your leisure.
