About this event

In this interactive masterclass, a member of the College of Law will introduce participants to the law on homicide. You will look at one of the most controversial debates in homicide cases and discuss whether the law can reflect the real-life experiences of everyone involved.

During the masterclass, you will explore questions such as:

  • How does English law deal with killings that are not planned but happen after someone loses self-control?
  • Does the law apply the loss of self-control standard differently to different people, and is that fair?
  • In what ways does the law hold back social or economic justice instead of advancing it?

Content note: this masterclass will include discussions of violence which some students could find upsetting. Please consider whether you feel comfortable engaging with this content before applying.

On-campus masterclasses are subject-based and are three hours long. They consist of a topic-based lecture and interactive activity, led by a SOAS academic. There is also a campus tour and a workshop on higher education led by Student Ambassadors.
