Join us for this masterclass with Julius Sen, which aims to equip participants with a deeper understanding of the global trading system and its relationship with development, sustainability, and regulation. 

Participants will explore how trade policy is shaped, how it affects business and development priorities, and how to navigate trade-related risks and opportunities in today’s volatile global environment.

Purpose

The Masterclass is designed to attain the following goals:

  • To improve understanding of the uncertainty and risks inherent in trade and business activities in any economy, and particularly in the global economy.
  • To familiarise participants with the World Trade Organization, what it does and how it works, and why it is under attack.
  • To understand the importance of regulation in creating markets or changing the way in which they operate.
  • To deepen participant understanding of the problems of delivering development and sustainability through an open trading system.

Content

Topics that will be covered include:

  • Insights and perspectives on the global trading system of particular relevance to policy makers and the business community.
  • Trade tensions, tariffs and various forms of retaliation. What is happening and what does this mean for emerging economies and business activity.
  • Does trade lead to development? Examples from around the world.
  • Can development priorities be addressed within the framework of a liberal trading order, and if so how?
  • Trade, development and sustainability. What does this mean for business?

Who is this masterclass for?

This Masterclass if for anyone who has an interest in trade and development debates, the current turmoil in the global trading system, and who is willing to participate and contribute to an interactive process. No formal qualifications are required, though relevant experience would be useful especially as the programme is designed to be interactive. Additionally, these Masterclasses would be useful and relevant to:

  • Company executives interested in these debates, or who have experience dealing with trade issues, and who are active in global trade and commerce.
  • Small business interests as they seek to connect to the European or global trading or commercial systems.
  • Embassy officials dealing with trade, regulatory, development and sustainability  issues.
  • Government and agency officials interested in deepening their knowledge and discussing ideas and approaches to regulation and policy.
  • Journalists who want to broaden their knowledge and deepen their understanding of the complexity and interconnectedness of the global trading system, together with emerging economy perspectives.
  • Representatives of the voluntary or NGO sector interested in any and all aspects of these issues.
  • Academics and students from any stream who want to familiarise themselves with these debates, and who are interested in deepening and widening their knowledge.

About the instructor

Julius Sen is an Associate Director and Senior Programme Advisor at LSE Enterprise, the commercial arm of the London School of Economics and Political Science. With over 25 years in the Indian Administrative Service, he has extensive experience in policy-making and implementation at both state and regional levels. 

At the LSE, he designs and delivers executive education programmes for governments and private sector entities worldwide, focusing on trade, regulation, competitiveness, and economic policy. He also serves as an Honorary Professor of Public Administration and is a member of the International Trade Policy Unit at the LSE.
