In the 2025 SOAS Centre of Taiwan Studies Summer School, we are pleased to welcome Professor Ling-fang Cheng to share her insights on gender politics and reproductive rights in Taiwan.
The disputes over the abortion policies have always involves two opposite values, Pro-life vs. Pro-choice. However, their mobilization of various social organizations, discourses, active actors and social values has always closely related to local gender politics. T
his talk focuses on the disputes from 2002 onward, and gives more elaboration on the 2012 disputes over the revision of the Genetic Health Act as promulgated in 1984. It will also discuss the latest development on abortion policy proposed by women’s groups.
Through a historical perspective, we could be able to understanding the changing of gender relations over women’s body in Taiwan.

Former Director of the Institute of Gender Studies, Kaohsiung Medical University. Specialised in gender and sociology, gender and STS(Science, Technology and Society), gender and work. Ph.D. (Essex), M.Phil. (Leeds).
