Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures

About

Our expertise in the languages and cultures of East Asia will open the doors to one of the most economically vibrant, and culturally exciting regions of the world.

China, Japan and Korea have all seen rapid economic and social development over the past 70 years, while their TV shows and film, food, fashion and computer games, Manga and anime, K- and J-pop, have become an important part of global popular culture.

If you have ever wanted to understand the culture, history, and society of this dynamic region, or if you dream of working in East Asia, our degrees will provide you with all the tools you need. We offer a full range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes on China, Japan, and Korea that will provide you with a wealth of transferable skills that will open exciting career paths for you with both domestic and international companies that do business in East Asia.

Our degrees offer both intensive and less intensive language study options, allowing you to gain an advanced level of proficiency in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean. Our four-year undergraduate degrees and intensive language MA degrees both include periods of study at one of our partner universities in East Asia.

"TV shows and film, food, fashion and computer games, Manga and anime, K- and J-pop, have become an important part of global popular culture. Many also continue to be drawn to the rich diversity and dynamism of East Asia’s pre-modern literary, religious, artistic and philosophical traditions.

Our expertise allows you to gain specialist knowledge in the regions of your interest, in their classical traditions as well as their contemporary developments."
