Huang Shan is a historian of material culture and sensory experience in medieval and early modern Asia. Her research explores how aromatic substances—particularly musk—shaped medical knowledge, commercial networks, and cross-cultural encounters across the Silk Road. Drawing on sources in Chinese, Tibetan, Arabic, and Persian, her work brings together sensory studies, the history of science and medicine, and global history. Her current project traces the trajectories of musk through imperial pharmacopoeias, merchant caravans, and ritual spaces, analyzing how this singular olfactory commodity became entangled in ethical, religious, and political discourses across the medieval and premodern periods.
