About this event

Anthropology Masterclass: 'Anthropology and Humour'

Date: 25th March 2024

Time: 1:00pm – 4:00pm

Venue: On Campus

This masterclass is an introduction to the field of Social Anthropology through the lens of humour and society. The session will offer participants a taste of how anthropologists have approached the many aspects of jokes and joking relationships across the world.

Humour has long played a vital role in different human societies. Some classic works of anthropology argued that jokes can defuse social tension. More contemporary works, however, have pushed this idea further to show a more complicated picture of humour’s social potential. The masterclass will introduce a range of concepts and case examples that aim to sharpen our understanding of jokes and their significance in everyday social life.

On Campus Masterclasses are subject based and are three hours long. They consist of a topic based lecture and interactive activity, led by a SOAS academic. There is also a campus tour and a workshop on Higher Education led by Student Ambassadors.
