About this event

The SOAS Chinese Music Ensemble, SOAS Chinese Culture Society and The Meridian Society are delighted to present a retrospective view of the British Museum’s highly successful exhibition China’s Hidden Century with lead curator Jessica Harrison-Hall.

Ms Harrison-Hall will discuss the cultural creativity that emerged during the last hundred years of the Qing Dynasty despite the social, economic and political upheavals of the time. Following her talk, she will be joined by Dr Lars Laamann, Senior Lecturer in the History of China at SOAS, and Dr Hwee-San Tan, Research Associate in Ethnomusicology at SOAS, in a panel discussion on this period of history.

The event will begin and end with performances of Qing Dynasty folk music performed by the SOAS Chinese Music Ensemble.
