Biography

Dr Natalia Paszkiewicz is Project Manager of the UKRI-funded research and innovation project ‘Bridging religious studies, gender & development and public health to address domestic violence: A novel approach for Ethiopia, Eritrea and the UK’. The project is dedicated to the development and strengthening of religio-culturally sensitive domestic violence alleviation systems.

Dr Paszkiewicz is an anthropologist with a particular interest in migration and refugee studies. In 2011, she completed a PhD study at the University of Brighton that explored the intersection between UK asylum policy and statutory social services responses to asylum seekers and refugees in the theoretical framework of ethics of care. For her postdoctoral research on the project entitled ‘Healthy Housing for the Displaced’ at the University of Bath, she conducted fieldwork in displacement camps in Jordan, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Bangladesh, Turkey, Nepal and Peru.

Dr Paszkiewicz has twenty years' experience of working with migrants, asylum seekers and refugees in different capacities, including as a researcher involved in applied social sciences projects, and as a practitioner in the third sector. Previously she was Project Lead at Da'aro Youth Project in London, a grassroots organisation supportingyoung unaccompanied refugees from the Horn of Africa. As Project Lead, she was responsible for overall management of the charity, including budgeting and finance, team management, communication, monitoring and evaluation, and reporting to funders.

Dr Paszkiewicz has provided consultancy and research support on topics related to forced migration, specifically around issues of economic inclusion of refugees and livelihoods in the humanitarian sector. She has also published journalistic pieces discussing refugee protection and political violence, with a focus on the Horn of Africa.
