Yussuf Shoka Hamad

Yussuf was born and grew up in Zanzibar.

He has a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) with Education in English and Swahili from the State University of Zanzibar (SUZA) and an MA in African Studies from SOAS, University of London.  He is a native Swahili speaker with extensive teaching experience in Primary, Secondary and Higher Education environments. He is a writer of Swahili works, including short stories. His recent short story, “Mzimu wa Kipwerere’ (The Shrine of Kipwerere), is featured in the collection of the short story book “Mapambazuko ya Machweo”, used as a set book in Kenyan Secondary schools. He has taught at the State University of Zanzibar (SUZA), Stanford University, USA, as a Fulbright Teaching Assistant (FLTA), and SOAS University of London.

He is currently a CULP Swahili Teaching Associate at the University of Cambridge Language Centre. He is working on his PhD in Linguistics at the School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics, SOAS University of London.
