From TEI to JSON within IIIF

This project pioneers annotation technologies of images.

This project builds on a collaboration developed between Almut Hintze and DataFutures GmbH, a not-for-profit company based in the UK and in Germany. As part of my Horizon2020 MUYA-IIIF Proof of Concept project, we built the prototype of a sustainable standards-based infrastructure for newly digitised Zoroastrian manuscripts using the Invenio Research Data Management (InvenioRDM) platform developed by CERN. The infrastructure addresses the broader challenge of creating reliable services for heritage and research data in the Humanities.

The project “From TEI to JSON within IIIF” inserts XML-TEI transcriptions of Zoroastrian manuscripts accomplished under this applicant’s ERC Advanced Grant project MUYA into this platform, convert the XML-TEI to JSON and visualise the XML transcriptions next to the appropriate manuscript images, some of which have already been annotated within the InvenioRDM platform in this applicant’s ERC Proof of Concept project.

This research laid the foundation for and lead to a new proposed application in 2024 for Leverhulme Research Centre for Investment in Cultural Heritage, in collaboration with DataFutures. The research idea of the proposed Centre addresses the problem of long-term preservation of digital data, a problem faced by a great number of research projects. The output of this IKE project and of the proposed Research Centre application would benefit numerous other projects in the Humanities and Social Sciences.
