This course examines development processes and policies from a political economy perspective. It is designed to provide students with a core competency in economic theory and policy relevant to the study of international development theory and practice.

In this module, students will begin their studies of the areas of Asia, Africa and the Middle East. The module will use the city-spaces and urban life of London to begin to engage with cultures from these regions as they are transported and transformed as they find roots in this post-imperial centre.

This module introduces students to key topics in global linguistic diversity, enabling students to put into a global context the language, region or culture that their degree programme focuses on.

This module is designed to introduce all first-year students of Languages and Cultures to ideas, theories and examples of the representation of Otherness. The overall aim is to introduce a greater degree of awareness and self-reflection in relation to their own study of “other” cultures. The module begins by inviting students to consider their own experiences of “Otherness” that they bring to their interest in the geographical region on which they are focussed. What experiences, for example, of travel to other countries and engagement with other cultures and people from those cultures do they have. And how have these experiences shaped their understandings? What differences exist between the categories of tourist, traveller and student. The module then goes on to introduce key terms and ideas that will be used to structure the subsequent discussions in the module.

Building on the first year core course, Introduction to Development Studies, this course will explore key issues, debates and theories through case studies and / or a regional focus. Each theme will be taught across several sessions, to provide a comparative approach that explores the importance of context in shaping outcomes, policies and processes of development. The course will show, through selected case studies, the relationship between theoretical work and empirical work in development studies. Students will learn competing theoretical approaches to the issues and themes, and how data is used by different perspectives, both to illustrate the contentions of a particular theory, and undermine the contentions of other approaches. Rather than being taught in the abstract, specific development debates will be used to illustrate the theoretical approaches, and the relationship between theory and empirical research. These debates will include a focus on states and institutions; violence and conflict; social movements and civil society; finance; labour and development; and natural resource development.

This module looks at the writings and influence of key voices that have inspired and influenced  development through the years. The module explores how different writers have built on each other's work,  as well as how they diverge and conflict in their understanding of what constitutes development. Students consider the historical and contemporary relevance of these works, deepening and broadening their understanding of how key ideas shape perceptions, processes and projects of development in the world around us.

The module starts with a historical overview of the history of human engagement with the environment to understand the emergence of contemporary environmental problems and concerns. Then selected environmental controversies, their origins and impacts, are discussed. The final focus is on global and national environmental governance since 1990 and exploring environmental knowledge production from a ‘situated knowledge’ perspective.

Both mainstream and heterodox approaches to Development Economics will be covered. Students will have the opportunity to critically engage with international development policy debates by unpicking the theories, frameworks and methods underpinning these debates. Moving away from narrow understandings of economy, it will explore how economic life is embedded in social relations, cultural transformations and political action. This includes vital topics such as money and commodities, the gendering/racialising of labour, cultures of consumption, informal economies, indebtedness and finance. Finally, it will investigate how anthropologists are envisaging the future of economic life and alternatives to neoliberal austerity, and how an engaged anthropology can contribute to shaping alternatives.

This module takes the specific topics of health, well-being, embodiment, resilience, human relations to the environment and questions of climate change and views and analyses them through the lens of culture studies. The module is team taught by lectures with expertise in language-based cultural studies with reference to Asia, Africa and the Middle East, whose research and teaching incorporates a focus on areas of health and well-being such as HIV-AIDS, cancer, Covid-19, public health discourses and their relation to difference cultural perspectives on embodiment. The module interweaves these concerns into the study of the need for human resilience in response to current global crises, first and foremost among which are questions of environmental destruction and climate change. The module concludes with an emphasis on the need for cross-cultural communication and intercultural understanding for global collaboration to find effective solutions to the problems of our times.

This module will examine a range of genres and forms, and aims to provide students with an insight into motif and interpretation of love and loss by looking at specific selection of texts in English translation (in poetry and prose) by different authors from across the regions of Africa, the Middle East, South and South East Asia, from the ancient times to the present day.

This module will examine the relationship between the city and screen cultures in Africa, the Middle East, South and Southeast Asia and beyond. In addition to examining the city from a screen studies perspective, the module will also draw on key ideas from geography, urban studies and cultural studies.

This module introduces students to the major themes of contemporary Middle Eastern fiction from the 20th and 21st century through the concepts of identity and belonging. It will familiarise them with the historical, cultural, and political dimensions of the region through analysis and close reading of literary texts. Students will also have the opportunity to engage with the theoretical and critical language of literary studies.

This module offers further instruction in core areas of articulatory phonetics and theoretical phonology, building on the initial treatment of these topics in the first-year module ‘Sound, grammar and meaning in language’. This includes an understanding of the International Phonetic Alphabet, articulatory parameters for vowels and consonants, phonemes vs. allophones, phonological processes, universal and typological processes, sound change, subsegmental representations, suprasegmental representations (tone, syllables and stress).

The module is designed to provide students with a good general introduction to the work of critics and writers who are either from Africa or of African-descent and who examine the historical legacy of Africa and its Diaspora by engaging with such important themes as self-representation and cultural identity. While helping students come to an understanding of how the African experience has been examined and engaged with in terms of the historical vicissitudes of the people of the continent and its Diaspora, the module also aims at helping and encouraging them to develop critical and analytical skills that move away from dominant Eurocentric and Western perspectives.

This is an introductory course to Arabic Culture with focus on the Modern Arab Middle East. On completion of this course, students will have gained basic knowledge of (1) theories and methods of studying culture and (2) history of development of Arabic culture as well as the major cultural institutions in the contemporary Arab World.

This module introduces students to the major themes of contemporary Middle Eastern fiction from the 20th and 21st century through the concepts of identity and belonging. It will familiarise them with the historical, cultural, and political dimensions of the region through analysis and close reading of literary texts. Students will also have the opportunity to engage with the theoretical and critical language of literary studies.

This module introduces students to the major aspects of contemporary Middle Eastern fiction from the 20th and 21st century through the theme of race, gender and resistance. It will look at how resistance is expressed in relation to violence, freedom and humour in the fictional world and expressions of where resistance has failed. It will introduce students to postcolonial studies to anchor contemporary critical race and gender critique within literary studies. It will also engage with freedom-fighting narratives as well as intersectional identities of resistance where race, class and gender (among others) come together.

This course offers a transdisciplinary look at contemporary cultural products and cultural modes of production in South and South East Asia. Combining the theoretical framework of British Cultural Studies (Hoggart, Hall, During) with the post-colonial discourses that have underpinned the study of culture in South and South East Asia, the course will explore how particular cultural practices in both regions relate to wider systems of power as embodied in belief systems, ethnicities, caste, national and transnational politics, language, and gender. Working from non-essentialist views of culture as constantly changing sets of practices and processes, the course will seek to introduce the students to reading/readings of cultural texts and use these exercises as engaged approaches to a critical understanding of the cultures of both regions, as well as the continuities and discontinuities between them.

This module builds on the theoretical knowledge and foundations gained through the first 2-years study, and asks how you will situate yourself in processes of social transformation and change for global development.

The Independent Study Project (ISP) gives students the opportunity to develop, implement and write up an independent research project. It may be based on original field work, the critical analysis of statistical data, the critical evaluation and analysis of documents, or the original synthesis of secondary materials.

This Professional Placement module involves students being placed within a development organisation, to participate in a specific element of development research or practice. The aim is that students' prior academic studies will inform and enrich their experience of professional practice, and the exposure to professional practice will inform and enrich their analysis of development processes. This module will demonstrate an understanding of debates about the definition of forced migration in social scientific literature, analyse how different processes generate forced migration and key historical and contemporary trends around the world, and demonstrate knowledge of the major policy frameworks that respond to displacement, and debates around these.

What is migration? Is this the “age of migration”? What is Diaspora and what challenges do diasporic communities bring to modern political constructions such as the nation-state, national “imagined” communities, citizenship and their associated metaphysics of sedentarism? This module explores these issues by critically engaging with the ways in which migration and diaspora have been understood historically and in modern and contemporary times.

Students will engage with the central theoretical and ethical debates relating to anthropologies of climate change, and consider how these have developed in relation to key social movements and moments from the 1960s onwards. Questions of temporality, political economy, development, justice, the concept of harm, emotion, activism and feminist ecologies of care are explored in the context of the anthropocene, with students encouraged to consider how they might approach crafting their own anthropologies of climate change.

This course looks at the interaction between China's economic transformation and world development since the late 1970s until the present time. The emphasis is on critically analyzing and assessing this interaction from alternative historical and theoretical perspectives.

This course introduces International Relations students to a wide range of issues in the contemporary world centred on conflict and the liberal world order. We look historically at the decline of inter-state war and the rise (and now decline) of civil wars, and at the rise of global terrorism and its implications, focusing on efforts to combat both the occurrence and conduct of conflict through international law and norms with a particular focus on the politics of human rights, international justice and humanitarianism. We look more specifically at the protection of civilians, torture, civil liberties, cyber warfare and drones, and the Responsibility to Protect. We also ask whether the rise of populism might erode the willingness of Western democracies to support, in principle at least, international norms and at the implications of this both for the liberal world order as a whole and the globalisation of democracy in particular.

This ISP gives students the opportunity to develop specialised knowledge, undertake independent research and write-up on a topic of their choosing under the guidance of an academic supervisor. Students will learn how to organise their independent learning and demonstrate originality, structure, and implement their research, produce literature review, and, where applicable, draw together issues of theory, and methodolog.

This module introduces the practice and principles of audio-visual translation, primarily subtitling. It covers two main components in subtitling - the practical including associated technology and concepts that underpin the practice and general theoretical arguments that surround subtitling as a genre in translation studies. The module provides students with opportunities to practice subtitling, first by translating scripts under subtitling conditions, and then using subtitling software programmes to produce a finished product.  This module also develops students’ independent working abilities by preparing & organising presentations. It is also aimed to help students develop linguistic skills, cultural awareness and subtitling techniques required to work as a screen translator.
