About this event

Acclaimed Writer Leila Aboulela will launch her latest book 'River Spirit' at SOAS Centre of African studies Seminar series.

The event is partnership with The Society for the Study of the Sudans (SSSUK) whose President is Leila Aboulela. This is “a spellbinding new novel about an embattled young woman in the years leading up to the British conquest of Sudan”, comments her publisher, Saqi. It is a story about love, slavery, the anti-colonial struggle, politico-religious fervour, and so much more.

About the author

Leila Aboulela lives and writes in Scotland, and she was the first winner of the Caine Prize for African Writing.

About the discussant

Fergus Nicoll, former BBC World Service journalist and historian of the pre-colonial period, when the Mahdi ruled Sudan.
