Abstract

It is reasonable to assume that the manner in which leaders leave office has implications for a country’s subsequent political development. This presentation focuses on the contentious events surrounding President Soeharto’s downfall in May 1998. The speaker gained access to some members of the Soeharto family and inner circle in January 2020. Preliminary findings will be discussed. Some of the unresolved issues from the transition era include the ‘Malang mystery’, the Golkar party convention, and the outbreak of vigilante violence in the early reform era ( reformasi ). Recent developments to be discussed include legacy efforts such as ‘bulan Pak Harto’, media and press campaigns such as Cendana News, and plans for centenary commemorations in June 2021.
