Sacred Truths: An Interactive Calligraphy Workshop

How does calligraphic imagination find its locus in contemporary art? Featuring artists Qu Leilei and Caroline Deane, this interactive event mobilises the art of Chinese calligraphy to pierce the entire toxic system of misinformation of our time.

Is there anything that we may call 'truth' anymore? Does anyone actually mean what they say? This contemporary art event stands as an urgent cry to a world in which we are sleepwalking ourselves into an oblivion of misinformation, one in which major decisions can be based on carefully constructed lies.

The event is free and open to the public. Turning audiences into artists, this workshop will result in a large-scale, collaborative artwork that cries out the need to awaken ourselves.

About the Artists

Qu Leilei was a founding member of the Stars group in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The avant-garde activities of the Stars group have been recognised as a foundational movement in the history of contemporary Chinese art. Based in London since 1985,

Qu Leilei is now one of China's leading contemporary artists. In recent years he has continuously created art projects that combine painting and installation. His work has been exhibited at venues including the British Museum, the Venice Biennale, the Ashmolean Museum and the Royal Palace in Milan.

Caroline Deane is a London-based contemporary artist specialising in oils, pastels, Chinese ink and mixed media. Most of her work takes inspiration from Chinese art and philosophy. Her work has been exhibited extensively in London’s West End and in China.

About the Curatorial Team

This event is convened by Panpan Yang with curatorial assistance of Jennifer Fleming, Mia Chengchen, Zhang Yu, Xiaoye Gu, Jiaqi Zhang, Felicity Loftus, Madeleine Holley, and Maja Ewa Frosztega.
