This is a basic introductory language aquisition module for absolute beginners in the written and spoken language; students are not assumed to have any previous knowledge of the language or its script. The module covers several tenses and basic constructions of the language, enabling students to acquire basic skills in reading, writing, comprehension and speaking. Successful students will gain the ability to read and write short simple texts, and communicate on simple everyday topics. Literacy in the script will be taught early on, and emphasis will be placed on good pronunciation and on the social and linguistic conventions of everyday conversation.
Due to the similarities between spoken Hindi and Urdu at this level, students will be given the opportunity to learn both Hindi script and Urdu script.
Suitable for any programme in which the student’s interest involves working on disciplines related to the Hindi speaking region of South Asia and students on any PG degree that allows students to take a language module.
Students taking this module are strongly encouraged to also enrol onto Hindi Language 1 B (PG) - 15PSAH023 in Term 2.
Students are not assumed to have any previous knowledge of the language or its script.
Objectives and learning outcomes of the module
On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:
- Gain knowledge and understanding of basic Hindi grammar
- Gain knowledge and understanding of essential Hindi vocabulary
- Gain knowledge and understanding of the appropriateness of basic Hindi structures and expressions in a given context
- Demonstrate the ability to understand sentences and short passages in written Hindi on certain everyday topics
- Demonstrate the ability to produce sentences in written Hindi on certain everyday topics
- Demonstrate the ability to produce sentences in spoken Hindi on certain everyday topics
- Demonstrate the ability to understand spoken sentences in Hindi on certain everyday topics
Total of 10 weeks teaching with 4 hours classroom contact per week
Scope and syllabus
- Script and pronunciation.
- Greetings and introductions.
- Describing people, places and objects.
- Expressing possession and ownership.
- Making requests and expressing needs, desires, likes and dislikes.
- Describing habits and daily routine using the present tense.
- Talking about the past.
Method of assessment
- One mid-term test (40 minutes) in term 1 (30%)
- One end of term test (60 minutes) at the end of term 1 (40%)
- One oral recording submitted in term 1 (30%)
