Module overview
This module introduces spoken elementary Cantonese. It will cover the 26 lessons and approximately 1400 items of vocabulary in Hugh Baker & Pui-Kei Ho: Cantonese. A Complete Course for Beginners (London: Hodder & Stoughton Ltd., 2003).
Prerequisites
At least one year of intensive Mandarin Chinese. The module is intended primarily for students with a good grasp of Mandarin grammar.
Objectives and learning outcomes of the module
At the end of this module, the student should be able to hold a simple conversation in Cantonese and function adequately in standard social situations requiring the use of Cantonese.
Workload
Total of 20 weeks of teaching with 3 hours classroom contact per week.

Method of assessment
- One 2,500 word essay (20%)
- Mid-year oral examination of 10 minutes duration (30%)
- End of year oral of 20 minutes duration (50%)
