Module overview
The teaching materials will be provided during the module. Students will be provided with specific vocabulary related to Business. The teaching will be conducted mainly in Chinese.
Prerequisites
Objectives and learning outcomes of the module
On successful completion of the module, a student should be able to demonstrate the ability to:
- understand, translate and write formal letters, business documents and give presentations in Chinese
- use online Chinese sources effectively to enhance their knowledge and skills for business purposes
- conduct business-related verbal (e.g. face-to-face, telephone) transactions.
Workload
Total of 10 weeks teaching with 3 hours classroom contact per week consisting of a 2 hour lecture and a 1 hour tutorial.
Scope and syllabus
The syllabus will cover aspects of all languages skills (i.e. reading, writing, listening, speaking and translation). The materials will be business- related and cover various aspects of finance, management and business. This module has been designed to provide MA students the opportunity to enhance their understanding and knowledge of business related Chinese. It will enable students to make better use of Chinese language materials and enhance their core studies.
Method of assessment
Coursework assignments and in class tests (20%); two written assignments (translation, composition) of 1,000 Chinese characters (20%); a five minute oral presentation in the middle of the module (10%); a 10 minute oral presentation at the end of the module (20%); a 2 hour test held at the end of the module (30%).
Suggested reading
As this is an upper intermediate level language module. The students will be assessed for the language level. Texts will be designed by the staff in the Department.
